Moving in to Student Housing

Plan your move

Good planning is the best way to ensure a smooth transition into VIU Student Housing. The move-in checklist covers things you can do to get ready in advance. And the top ten things to bring to bring list is based on the advice of many VIU students.

Move-in checklist

There’s lots to think about before you even start packing.

  1. Review the Community Standards Handbook so you know what to expect and what is expected of you as a resident.
  2. Connect with your roommate before meeting in person in Student Housing. You can email through the VIU Housing Portal. Getting to know them a little before you live together will make those first few days of sharing space easier.
  3. Figure out when you are moving in, when your first class is.
  4. Learn your new address, look at maps of Student Housing and VIU campus.
  5. Get your student ID card as soon as you can.
  6. Consider what items that you need to bring and what can be borrowed or shared instead. The fewer items you bring with you, the easier it will be to stay organized.

Advice from VIU Student Housing residents

  1. Clothes hangers and closet organizers.
  2. Headphones, earplugs and smart devices (group living can be noisy).
  3. Outerwear, raincoat and boots (we live in a rainforest climate most of the year).
  4. Cutlery, dishes, pots and pans (in some buildings you will need a tote to carry your kitchen items to and from the kitchen).
  5. Extension cords, chargers and power bars (for all your fun devices).
  6. Toiletries, medications, towels, bathmat and cleaning supplies.
  7. Bedding and pillows (Our beds are a Twin XL).
  8. Desk lamp, decorations and plants (please don't use anything that will wreck our walls, no pins, screws, or super sticky LEDs or wall hooks)
  9. Mini fridge (Max size 5.5 cubic feet). Common rooms have only a shared freezer with limited space. Apartments have a shared regular fridge with a small freezer, but you may still want your own mini fridge.
  10. Bathing suit, sunglasses and a positive attitude

Getting to campus

See the travel to Nanaimo campus page for details on getting to campus. The entrance to Student Housing is off Third St.

Rock VIU Student Housing Orientation move-in

You will receive an invitation to Rock VIU Student Housing Orientation via email. Orientation activities are a great way to get to know your housing neighbours and to get comfortable on campus.

Quiet move-in

The move-in that is part of RockVIU can be loud and overstimulating to some people. If you’d prefer a quiet move-in, log into the Housing Portal and request a low-stimulus move-in.
